Two clockwork mice, a father and son, begin life in a toyshop. All the mouse child wants is for a lady elephant toy to be his mother. Soon they are sold, and for years are only brought out at Christmas. Longing for freedom, the mouse child gets them knocked into the garbage, from which they are retrieved by a passing tramp, who sets them on an adventure in which they meet many wonderful characters including the tyrannical Manny Rat.
